About Martin County
Martin County, north of the West Palm Beach/BocaRaton area and south of Ft. Pierce on the the Atlantic coast, was established in 1925. Named after John W. Martin, governor from 1925 to 1925, Martin County was created from a portion of Palm Beach County and from a much smaller portion of St.Lucie County. Martin County is the southern most county of the Treasure Coast region. Most of the population resides east of Florida's Turnpike. Much of the southern region of the county is wetlands or agricultural. Most of Martin County's agricultural land is in citrus. It ranked No. 7 in the nation's production of grapefruit and oranges according to a 1997 Agricultural Census. Along the coast, wide sandy beaches offer haven to many species of wildlife and provide great spots for tourists and residents alike to enjoy the natural beauty and participate in water related activities.
