The community of Tamiami was named for the Tamiami Trail. The trail connects Tampa and Miami, and the name is a combination of the two cities’ names. Tamiami is pronounced "Tammee-Ammy," not "Tam-My-Ammy". The community of Tamiami is about 7 square miles and located just east of University Park. The population os Tamiami is approximately 55,000. Miami International Airport is 8 miles from the center of Tamiami and 2 miles from Florida International University.
