Neptune Beach is located on a barrier island situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intercoastal Waterway. Wheeler had to walk to and from the Mayport rail stop to his home every day after his commute from Jacksonville via the Florida East Coast Railway. Mr. Wheeler’s friend told him that if he was to make a train stop closer to his home, the train would have to stop. Dan G. Wheeler built his train stop close to his home and called it Neptune. In 1931, the residents of the present day Neptune Beach seceded from Jacksonville after a tax revolt.
