About Leon County
Located in the northern part of the state, Leon County was named after the Spanish conquistador, Juan Ponce DeLeon, who was the first European to explore Florida in 1513. In search for the "fountain of youth," Ponce DeLeon named the state after the Spanish word for "flowery." Leon County is now home to Florida's capital located in Tallahassee. Rolling hills cover much of Leon County setting it apart from most of Florida. In an exceptional effort to reclaim and preserve unique and natural areas, Leon County has 1300 acres of open space, forest and woodlands between the Miccosukee Canopy Road Greenway and J.R. Alford Greenway. In 2007, Leon County was awarded the National Association of County Park an Recreation Officials' Environmental and Conservation Award for its effort to preserve its natural resources. Leon County also holds the distinction that its citizens reflect the highest level of education of any of Florida's 67 counties. Two of Florida's major public universities, Florida A&M and Florida State University make their home in Leon County.
