About Lake Worth
Just like the rest of Florida, Lake Worth was named after a military man that came to fight the American Indians. Just happens that this man was a General by the name of William J. Worth, who led the US forces in the Second Seminole War. Included on the list of national historic sites is the Gulfstream Hotel, built in the 1920’s and recently renovated. Like many small towns in Palm Beach County, the hurricane of 1928 destroyed much of the vertical infrastructure including the beachfront casino and the only bridge over Lake Worth, leading to a local economic decline. The Great Depression left its mark on Lake Worth as Franklin D. Roosevelt built a Works Progress Administration building which is now the City Hall. After World War II, the world was ready for change and many cultures from Europe, Quebec and Norway Found their way to Lake Worth. The town today remains flavored by the influences of these far away cultures as shop owners keep their founders’ hopes and dreams alive with interesting micro breweries, bravarian delis and chocolatiers. Downtown Lake Worth has experienced renewed commercial interests. The city’s main street is Lake Avenue which contains the Lake Worth Play House and the famed Art Deco Cinema Building. It has been a slow recovery from the devastating hurricanes of Frances, Jeanne and Wilma, a trio that Lake Worth residents would like to forget. These storms wreaked havoc on the fishing pier and other older historic structures.
