About Kissimmee
Kissimmee, Florida is a close neighbor to Orlando, just 22 miles to the southwest. As a bedroom community of Orlando, Kissimmee has experienced rapid growth since Disney World came to Florida in 1971. Kissimmee is a city in Osceola County and has a population of near 61,000. The metropolitan area is also known as Orlando-Kissimmee, Florida. Kissimmee began its forage as one of Florida's first cities in the early 19th century. In 1883, Hamilton Disston contracted with the state of Florida to drain large parcels of central Florida land. If he was successful, he would be compensated with 50% of the newly reclaimed dry land. Hamilton was successful and became America's largest single land owner. By 1885, the railroads had pushed through central Florida into Tampa bringing hardship to Hamilton's land develop efforts. He was forced to abandon his effort following two hard freezes in the late 1894 and 1895 which left the economy of Kissimmee is shambles. With the orange groves lost and the railroads competitive advantage, Hamilton's land operations and his fledgling steamboat industry were in near bankruptcy. Kissimmee emerged in the early 1900's as a cattle ranching city until the arrival of Walt Disney in 1971 and “the rest was history.”
