About Bonita Springs
Bonita Springs is a city located in Lee County, Florida. It falls just between Naples and Fort Myers, just north of Marco Island. As of 2007, Bonita Springs had an estimated population of 42,268. Bonita Springs is home to many beautiful beaches and islands along the Gulf of Mexico. It is sometimes referred to as "The Gateway to the Gulf". The Bonita Springs area also has extensive freshwater lakes and streams used for boating, fishing and shelling. Bonita Springs was originally populated by the Calusa Indians. The tribe of Calusa Indians believed that a local river, known as Surveyor's Creek had the power to heal the sick. By the 18th Century the tribe was eliminated due to Spanish exploration and the arrival of Ponce De Leon. The only thing left of the Calusa was their unique painted pottery. Bonita Springs was all but forgotten until the 1880's when a man by the name of Braxton B Coomer purchased 6,000 acres of land and open up a large plantation. He named the area Survey. In 1912 J. Henry Ragsdale purchased 2,400 acres of the surrounding areas of Survey and changed the name to Bonita Springs. He believed this name had more appeal. Ragsdale's changes led to both railroads and highways in Bonita Springs. Today Bonita Springs still continues to grow and is known for it's laid back atmosphere and it's unique little town feel.
