About Seminole County
The development of Seminole County centers around the scenic 342 mile St. Johns River, a major artery into Central Florida from the East Coast. Seminole County was created out of Orange County in 1913 and is named for the Seminole tribe of Indians. The word “Seminole” is thought to be derived from the Spanish word Cimarron meaning “wild” or “runaway.” Before deciding on the name Seminole County, several other names were considered, such as Sanford County, then Celery County. Sanford and other communities in north Orange County had established separate identities long before the division into Seminole County became a reality. Sanford and Orlando grew apart in the ways their economies developed. A railroad linked both towns but there were no paved roads between them. Sanford developed a truck farming economy which relied heavily on shipping while Orlando centered more on citrus, commerce and tourism. It was, however, most likely a bitter sheriff’s race that ultimately brought about the Seminole County separation.
