About Nassau County
Nassau County, with a population estimated to be under 75,000 people, is located just South of the Georgia border and to the East side of the state of Florida. The County is considered to be a part of the Greater Jacksonville Metropolitan area A large portion of Nassau’s economy is driven by pulp production from the mill located in Fernandina Beach as well as trucking and tree farming. A popular tourist destination in Nassau is Amelia Island, located in Fernandina Beach. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the Intercoastal waterway, marshes and tidal creeks, the wildlife in Amelia Island attracts birdwatchers and natures lovers from near and far. Amelia Island, the only inhabited island in Nassau County, is famous for its Live Oak trees. Legend has it that a woman named Kate Bailey and her husband built a Queen Anne house in 1895 and when Kate heard that the city was to axe down her favorite Live Oak that stood in the street in front of her home, she stood on her veranda, shotgun in hand to protect the tree. The tree, named “Kate’s tree” is still standing today.
